About WEEE recycling
Items such as those listed above are a fast-growing part of the waste and recycling industry. They’ve come under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment recycling (WEEE) Directive in the UK since the introduction of the WEEE Regulations 2006.
The Directive aims to reduce the amount of electrical and electronic equipment going to landfill. According to some estimates, around 2 million tonnes of WEEE items are discarded by each year in the UK – together, we can do our bit to make sure as many as possible are recycled.
Does my equipment come under WEEE?
As a general rule, if your unwanted electrical or electronic equipment has a plug or needs batteries, WEEE applies. IT and telecommunications equipment is one of the 10 categories currently outlined in Schedules 1 & 2 of the Regulations:
- Large household appliances
- Small household appliances
- IT and telecommunications equipment
- Consumer equipment
- Lighting equipment
- Electrical and electronic tools
- Toys, leisure and sports equipment
- Medical devices
- Monitoring and control equipment
- Automatic dispensers
In 2019 the scope of the Regulations will be extended. Whatever the changes, you can be sure that we’ll help you to comply with any new requirements.
